The History Department has been working toward understanding what would be most helpful to prepare our Ph.D.’s for the varied career paths they will take.  One of our faculty members serves as Placement Officer, working with our soon-to-be Ph.D.’s in preparation for the academic job market with workshops on cover letters, identifying openings, and scheduling mock interviews and talks. We offer courses on pedagogy (HIST 702), on the Professional Lives of Historians (HIST 703), and on Public History (HIST 671). We have been involved with the American Historical Association’s project on Career Diversity, informing our students about a broader array of job prospects for History Ph.D.’s and providing them with necessary experience through internships, training in digital humanities, connections with Carolina Public Humanities, and opportunities through the Graduate School.
