The Archive and the Making of Civil War History

Dr. Yael Sternhell

Department of History
Department of English and American Studies

Tel Aviv University

Dr. Sternhell will be presenting material from her forthcoming War on Record: The Archive and the Making of Civil War History, 1861-1901 (Yale University Press). Her book delves into the history of the compilation and publication of the massive archive of the American Civil War known as the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, which she argues was a formative influence on the emergence of “professional” history during the late nineteenth century. Her work revises assumptions about the primacy of German historiographical developments in the emergence of “scientific” history, especially in the United States.

Prof. Sternhell received her BA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her MA and Ph.D. from Princeton University (2008). She is the author of the much acclaimed Routes of War: The World of Movement in the Confederate South (Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press, 2012), which received the 2013 Francis B. Simkins Award for Best First Book in Southern History, was a Finalist for the 2013 Lincoln Prize, a Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2012, and a Civil War Monitor Best Book of 2012.
