NCGS Roundtable: Farewell NCGS – The Last Event after 17 Years

April 12 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Please join NCGS on Friday, April 12 from 2 – 4:30 p.m. on Zoom for a Challenging Conversations Series Roundtable on the theme “A Decline of German Studies & German History in the United States?”. The shrinking number of tenure-track jobs and the decline of undergraduate and graduate programs in German Studies and German History in recent years is alarming. Both developments threaten the future of the field. This roundtable will therefore address the following three questions with experts in the field: 1. What is the current situation in German Studies and German History? Is it the same for both fields? 2. How can we explain the developments? 3. Which consequences does it have for the future of the field and what can be done to change it?

With this discussion also the farewell of NCGS after 17 years will be marked. The roundtable includes JAMES CHAPPEL (Duke University), KAREN HAGEMANN (UNC-CH), SARA F. HALL (University of Illinois-Chicago, President of the German Studies Association), KONRAD H. JARAUSCH (UNC-CH), ADAM R. SEIPP (Texas A&M), PHILIPP STELZEL (Ducquesne University) and TERESA WELCH (UNC-G).

Details about the piece and presenters are available on the flyer below. More information about how to receive the Zoom link or about the NCGS Seminar series can be found at https://ncgsws.web.unc.edu.
