French-Senegalese film director Alice Diop at Duke

April 18 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Anne-Gaëlle Saliot would like to draw you attention to the exciting news that on April 18 the Center for French and Francophone Studies at Duke will welcome French-Senegalese film director Alice Diop.

Alice Diop‘s superb feature film, Saint Omer (2022), represented France in the “Best International Film” category at the 2023 Oscars. Her accolades include multiple Césars and the Louis Delluc award, and prizes from the Venice Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, and many others. Diop’s very rich work also includes documentaries focusing on marginalized populations and the banlieues, navigating the experience of black womanhood and the politics of the everyday in an oft-neglected depiction of France. Here is a link to a conversation she had with Fred Wiseman at the 2023 New York Film Festival. During the last French Film Festival, the Center for French and Francophone Studies screened Diop’s Saint Omer at the Rubenstein Arts Center Film Theater, which attracted a very full audience. The Q&A session following the screening exceeded well past its time limit. Her cinema is really one that fascinates audiences and fosters crucial conversations.
On April 18 at 3pm in the Pink Parlor on Duke East Campus, Anne-Gaëlle will be in conversation with Diop about her past works and future projects. The discussion in English will conclude with a Q&A from those in attendance and a reception.
