We are so incredibly proud of Nurlan Kabdylkhak, UNC History PhD Candidate in late imperial Russian and Central Asian History, who has been awarded a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for 2023. Nurlan’s dissertation is entitled “Muslim Institutions and Scholars of the Kazakh Steppe Under the Russian Tsars.” Intending to support promising scholars who are completing doctoral work on ethics and religious studies, the Newcombe Fellowship is extremely competitive. This year only 4.2% of all applicants were selected as Fellows. The selection committees agreed that the quality of the candidates was exceptionally high, so Nurlan’s award reflects the selection committees’ confidence in the excellence of his preparation and the contribution he will make to the study of ethical and religious values.
