William Sturkey’s recent publication, Hattiesburg: An American City in Black and White (Harvard University Press, 2019), is the subject of a review by Jennifer Szalai in the New York Times. Slazai praises Prof. Sturkey’s “cleareyed and meticulous book” for his ability to balance “the terrors of Jim Crow” with black Hattiesburgers’ communal organization that would provide the foundation for the midcentury Civil Rights movement. Congratulations William!
