My research interests primarily focus on environmental concerns in the German Democratic Republic and the state’s responses to the growing environmental movement in the 1980s. In particular, I intend to focus on the relationship between the East German dictatorship and environmental dissidents, what these dissidents demanded of their government, how the state addressed those demands, and, ultimately, what kind of role the environmental movement might have had in the unraveling of the Communist system in East Germany.
