My MA thesis, “’This is the point on which the whole matter hinges’: Locating and Including the Voices of Black Civil War POWs,” argues that black prisoners of war were central figures in the narrative of Civil War military prisons, yet they have remained largely ignored due to a presumed lack of sources coming from black POWs themselves. My research brings to light first-hand accounts by black POWs regarding their experiences, as well as the role black POWs played in the breakdown of the prisoner exchange, revealing their place within the larger narrative of Civil War prisons.
