Research Interests
Richard Talbert’s research focuses on Greek and Roman consciousness of space and time, and on mapping. He oversees the Ancient World Mapping Center (http://awmc.unc.edu),and took the lead in bringing two of its recent projects to publication: a major revision of his Atlas of Classical History, co-edited with Lindsay Holman and Benet Salway (Routledge); and the online map Catholic and Donatist Bishoprics in North Africa around the Time of the Conference of Carthage, 411 CE. He is co-presenter of the current virtual exhibition Late Ottoman Turkey in Princeton’s Forgotten Maps, 1883-1923 sponsored by Princeton University Library (https://arcg.is/PTCOm), and contributor to the forthcoming landmark Geographers of the Ancient Greek World edited by Graham Shipley (Cambridge UP, 2024).
