Unravelling the Ṭawāsīn of Ḥallāj: A conversation
September 8, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Please join us for a conversation between Nomanul Haq, Dean, Univesity of Management and Technology (Lahore) and Carl Ernst, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Islamic Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill.
You can find a brief description of the event here: “The Kitab al-Tawasin of the Sufi al-Hallaj (d. 922 CE) is a fascinating versified mystical treatise of a monumental and intriguing figure in the history of Sufism. Hallaj was mercilessly executed by Abbasid rulers in a mêlée of political and sectarian machinations. His fateful cry “I am the Truth” has echoed in Sufi chambers until this day, generating a legacy of devotional, romantic, and even secular resistance poetry and prose. Join us in a conversation between two distinguished scholars and translators of the Tawasin.”
The event is hosted by the Department of Religious Studies and co-hosted by the Department of History, UNC Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill Persian Studies, the Department of Asian and Middle East Studies, and the Carolina Asia Center.
