GIS Workshop

Join the DHL tomorrow at 4 PM in Pauli Murray 510 for the first QGIS workshop. (Here is the Zoom invite, although in-person attendance is recommended.) Learn how to use “georeferencing” to attach known coordinates to an image of a historical map. This workshop is geared toward new and beginner QGIS users – no prior experience with the software is expected. Together but on our own computers, we will explore the program’s basic features before we attempt georeferencing. A discussion of this tool’s applicability in our own research endeavors will follow. 

If you are interested in joining us, please email dhl@unc.edu for the workshop’s instructions and materials. If you are interested but cannot attend, we will send you the instructions so that you can practice on your own. We will host office hours in Pauli Murray 510 next Thursday, October 13 from 12:15 PM to 2:30 PM to answer any questions.

*Though the History Department uses the name Pauli Murray Hall for our building, on official maps you will find it as Hamilton Hall. Joseph Grégoire de Roulhac Hamilton’s intellectually dishonest historical and archival work promoted white supremacy. In contrast, Pauli Murray marshaled unassailable evidence and analysis in the service of racial and gender equality. In July 2020, all of the departments housed in the building agreed to adopt the name Pauli Murray Hall in place of Hamilton Hall. An official request with the Chancellor is pending.
