Shannon Eaves, an assistant professor at the College of Charleston, has received a prestigious AAUW fellowship to research and write her book, Illicit Intercourse: How the Sexual Exploitation of Enslaved Women Shaped the Antebellum South. The book examines the systemic sexual assault and exploitation of enslaved women and its political, social, and economic consequences in the South, drawing from Eaves’ personal family history and academic expertise. The fellowship allows her to focus exclusively on her manuscript, conduct archival research, and produce a deeper exploration of this critical topic.
