William Leuchtenburg, a leading historian of modern American politics, passed away on Jan. 28 at age 102. A professor emeritus at UNC-Chapel Hill, he was best known for Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal, which won the Bancroft Prize. Over his long career, he taught at Columbia, Harvard, and Oxford, led major historical organizations, and collaborated with Ken Burns. Leuchtenburg remained active in historical research until his final book, Patriot Presidents, published in 2023. A dedicated scholar and public intellectual, he left an enduring legacy in presidential history and democratic thought.
