William Sturkey – Recipient of the UNC Diversity Award

William Sturkey is one of only two recipients in the Faculty Category among a faculty of 3,500+ to receive the UNC Diversity Award.  The Diversity Award recognizes significant contribution, time and effort of Carolina community members towards advancing an inclusive climate for excellence in teaching, research, public service and academic endeavor. The award has been given annually in eight categories. This year, the categories have been narrowed to six to better focus on individual contributions to diversity and inclusion.

*Though the History Department uses the name Pauli Murray Hall for our building, on official maps you will find it as Hamilton Hall. Joseph Grégoire de Roulhac Hamilton’s intellectually dishonest historical and archival work promoted white supremacy. In contrast, Pauli Murray marshaled unassailable evidence and analysis in the service of racial and gender equality. In July 2020, all of the departments housed in the building agreed to adopt the name Pauli Murray Hall in place of Hamilton Hall. An official request with the Chancellor is pending.
