The History Department at UNC, Chapel Hill, boasts a long tradition of excellence in the study of the European Middle Ages, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With our current configuration of faculty, including Professors Marcus BullBrett Whalen, and Flora Cassen, our strengths include scholarship and teaching on such topics as medieval historiography and aristocratic culture, the crusades and apocalypticism, and late medieval Jewish history.

As part of the wider Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program (MEMS), the study of medieval history at UNC forms one part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary community dedicated to the study of European Middle Ages, as well as other parts of the medieval world. We also enjoy a close, collaborative relationship with the medievalist community at Duke University.
