The History Department offers students numerous advising resources to assist them with all things related to studying history at UNC, from making the initial decision to become a history major or minor to thinking about what to do after they complete their degree. Although history majors are not assigned individual faculty advisers, they are strongly encouraged to seek out the advice of their professors during office hours, especially if they are considering an independent study project, senior honors thesis or applying for graduate study.
The Undergraduate Adviser and Transfer Credit Officer, Dr. Matthew Andrews (andrewsm@email.unc.edu) serves as a general advising resource for all history majors and minors as well as first- and second-year students who are considering a degree in history.
Specifically, he can:
- provide detailed information about the history major or minor.
- help you with academic planning and course selection.
- refer you to specific professors who specialize in areas you’re interested in.
- check your progress toward meeting degree requirements.
- help you navigate various administrative processes.
- offer advice on Independent Study and the Senior Honors Program.
- help you find, apply to, and receive academic credit for Internships.
- help you plan for a study abroad program.
- evaluate transfer courses for history major credit.
- offer advice about graduate school and other post-graduate programs.
- help you think about possible careers and ways to approach job searches.
- refer you to relevant campus resources.
- discuss any other questions, concerns, or problems you may have.
Dr. Andrews holds several walk-in office hours each week, but it’s always best to schedule an appointment in advance so that you’ll be guaranteed a time. If you can’t meet during his scheduled office hours (see below), please contact him to make an appointment at another mutually convenient time.

Undergraduate Coordinator
The Undergraduate Coordinator, Wanda Wallace (allace@email.unc.edu), can help students with questions about course registration, scheduling, enrolling in History 390 seminars, and Phi Beta Kappa. Her office is located in the Main History Department Office on the 5th Floor of Hamilton Hall
