Undergraduate Major (Old Curriculum)

Undergraduate Program: Requirements of the History Major (in the "Old" Pre-2006 Curriculum)

(This description is for students who entered UNC as first-year students before fall 2006, sophomores before fall 2007, and juniors before fall 2008)

I. General College Requirements

The student must fulfill the requirements of the General College program as outlined in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Please note:

  • With the exception of the Free Elective Category, all General College courses must correspond by number with those listed under the "perspective" requirements.
  • Any undergraduate course will satisfy the Free Elective requirements.

II. History Department Requirements

Each major shall concentrate in one area: Ancient/Medieval, Global, Modern European, Third World/Nonwestern, or United States or devise a thematic concentration and have it approved by the Chair of the Undergraduate Studies Committee.

  • Ten courses in history are required (30 hours)
  • These ten courses can include two history courses used to fulfill the historical perspective of the General College.
  • A minimum of four and a maximum of six courses of these ten courses will fall into the student's field of concentration.
  • A minimum of four and a maximum of six courses will be outside of the student's field of concentration.
  • All majors will take at least one History Department course in Third World/Nonwestern history.
  • A minimum of six of the courses that a student takes for the major must be numbered 200 or above in the new numbering system ( 50 or above in the old numbering system).
  • Each major must take an Undergraduate Seminar in History, History 391-397 in the new numbering system (90 in the old numbering system).
  • At least seven of the ten courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
  • No history courses may be taken for Pass-Fail credit (even if the course serves as a free elective)
  • A maximum of thirteen history courses (40 hrs.) may be applied towards the A.B. degree. Any courses beyond the minimal ten (but not above the maximum of thirteen) will count as Free Electives.
  • No more than 5 courses of AP and transfer credit can count toward the major.

IMPORTANT! All history majors planning to study abroad should consult with the Study Abroad Office and with the faculty member handling transfer credit in the History Department both before their departure, to receive assistance in selecting appropriate history courses, and after their return, to obtain certification of their course work.

IMPORTANT! All history majors should see the history Adviser in Arts and Sciences each semester of the junior and senior years for evaluation of progress towards degree.
