Undergraduate Program

The History department's course offerings -- indeed, all of historical knowledge -- can be usefully categorized in any number of ways. The history major's standard fields of concentration reflect the discipline's traditional focus on regions, countries, and centuries. Students who are interested in particular themes, problems, or interpretations, however, might also envision the history department's course offerings as falling into coherent topical "clusters." By taking two or more courses that fall within any of the topical clusters listed below, students can link insights and critical perspectives derived from ostensibly different fields of concentration.

In reviewing this list of course clusters, which is hardly exhaustive, keep in mind that new courses focused on specific topics relevant to professors, research interests (History 100s) are offered every semester, though they are not listed below. Also, many of the department's undergraduate research seminars (History 90s) would fit comfortably into one or more of the rubrics listed here.
