Graduate History Society

All graduate students in the History Department are members of the Graduate History Society (GHS).  The GHS serves as an organizing group for social functions, academic concerns, and as a liaison between graduate students and other university organizations.  The GHS is led by a cabinet of elected officers:

  • Co-Presidents:  Serve as primary contacts for graduate student concerns, serve as student representatives on the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC), solicit feedback on policies and problems for the GSC, coordinate orientation activities, and facilitate student initiatives within the department.  They are also responsible for running elections for GHS positions in the spring.
  • Social Triumvirate:  Three graduate students serve as coordinators for social activities, including providing refreshments at orientation, planning departmental happy hours and occasional outings, and planning service projects for graduate students.
  • Speakers Committee:  Two students work to bring speakers of interest to the department—from within the department, within the university, or from the community—relying mainly on goodwill and charm.  As always, refreshments are provided!
  • Diversity Chair:  The Diversity Chair is responsible for promoting a diverse and dynamic atmosphere within the department, focusing specifically on alerting students to multicultural or diversity-themed events on campus.
  • GPSF Senator:  The GPSF Senator is the GHS liaison between the department and the Graduate and Professional Student Federation Senate.  He or she watches out for our interests and keeps us up to speed on university-wide events and policies including mixers, athletics, and administrative matters.
  • Funding Czar:  A relic from old Russia, the Funding Czar looks out for graduate students’ wallets, paying special attention to external funding possibilities and also keeping an eye on competitive universities’ stipend levels for teaching assistants.
  • Lounge Lizard:  The Lounge Lizard keeps our communal space livable and happy.  The LL is responsible for recycling in the grad lounge and making sure everything is in order.

The GHS meets periodically throughout the year to discuss any problems or issues that come up.
