My broad interests revolve around memory, national identity and modes of political opposition in Cuba. Presently, I am exploring these issues through a close examination of changing representations of independence hero Antonio Maceo (1845–1896). This research investigates the connections between national mythologies, identity formation and race in how Cubans constructed and contested memory of Maceo during the Republic (1902–1958).
