Research Interests

W. Miles Fletcher’s research interests lie in the field of modern Japanese history, 1868 to the present. His work first focused on the political and intellectual history of Japan during the interwar period. More recently his research has concentrated on the history of the political economy of Japan—the dynamics of Japan’s industrialization, especially in the cotton textile industry, and the relationship between the state and the private sector. He is currently working on the Japanese business community and Japan’s “lost decade” of the 1990s.
