How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in the graduate program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC‑CH).On this page and on the links provided here, you'll find a full description of graduate work in History at UNC‑Chapel Hill. If you still have unanswered questions after using these resources, contact either Violet Anderson, the Graduate Secretary, or The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).
Please note: Our expectation is that all our students, even those who begin by working on an M.A., are working towards doctoral degrees. We do not admit students for a terminal MA. If you are in obtaining an M.A. degree only, be sure to consider the excellent M.A. programs offered at UNC‑Charlotte, UNC‑Greensboro, and NCSU and elsewhere.
When applying, you MUST apply to the PhD program, even if you will not have your MA upon arrival.
Students with the M.A. from another institution are fully considered for admission into the doctoral program. For information about the program followed by students admitted with M.A. degrees, see appropriate web page.
We only admit students for the Fall.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Online applications are available at the Graduate School's Webpage, www.gradschool.unc.edu. In addition, you will need to send the following supporting information directly to the History Department:
1) transcripts
2) letters of recommendation
3) statement of purpose
4) writing sample
We recommend that you submit the application and all supporting materials by December 1st; the absolute deadline is midnight EST, December 15th. The admissions committee begins to review applications immediately thereafter. If your application is not complete, they will be reviewing an incomplete file. It is to your benefit to have your file complete by December 1st. We will then have time to assemble all the materials and answer questions about incomplete files with enough time for you send in any missing pieces. It is also recommended you gather all parts of the application and send them in together. Transcripts and recommendations should come to you sealed and may be included in the same envelope as your writing sample and statement of purpose. Doing this will help you ensure recommendations and transcripts reach us by our deadline. Please keep track of the status of your application online. Decisions will be mailed during the first part of April. Please be aware that the we do not accept electronic recommendations, writing samples or statement of purpose.
