Research Interests: My research focuses on the 19th-century U.S., especially Reconstruction and African-American history. For my master's thesis, I examined African-American involvement in the development of schools in post-Civil War Virginia. For my dissertation, I currently plan to examine the complex process of creating schools for African-Americans in Wilmington, NC, Richmond, VA, Mobile, AL, and Galveston, TX during Reconstruction, 1863-1877. I am particularly interested in the local, national, and global forces shaping the creation, development, and maintenance of the educational system during the initial years of these schools, with an emphasis on African-American involvement.
