Research Interests: My work explores the connection
between slavery, religion, and black politics in colonial,
revolutionary, and early national Massachusetts. My master's thesis
explored the development of slavery in Massachusetts, and how African
Americans were able to employ the religious discourse of their former
masters and take advantage of the Puritan emphasis on education and
conversion in their fight against slavery. My dissertation will extend
this analysis into the early nineteenth century, examining the
influence of religion on black politics, the growth of a free black
community in Massachusetts, and the impact this community had on the
development of a nationwide abolitionist movement.
