Research Interests
Watson's specialties are the antebellum South, Jacksonian America, and the history of North Carolina. He serves as Director of the UNC Center for the Study of the American South and co-editor of its journal, Southern Cultures. His most recent book is Andrew Jackson Versus Henry Clay: Democracy and Development in Antebellum America (1998). His most recent article is "'The Common Rights of Mankind:' Subsistence, Shad, and Commerce in the Early Republican South," The Journal of American History 83 (June 1996), 13-43.
