Current research projects include:

- Crucifixion--Faith in the Christian South: 1740-2000, An Interpretive History . . . of the social and cultural power of religion in the South. Essential to the story is that of African American churches and the development of religious movements from the 1850s through the late twentieth century. Equally essential is understanding the fundamentalist sensibility that came to characterize southern religion and culture. For an example of themes, see "'Christianizing' the South--Sketching a Synthesis" in New Perspectives in American Religious History, Ed by Harry S. Stout and Daryl G. Hart (New York: Oxford University Press, 1997) and "Religion in the South: Authenticity and Purity", Essays In American Religious History: Honoring William G. McLoughlin, Edited by Walter Conser, (Athens: University of Georgia Press, Fall 1998).
