Research Interests

Past books include Sex, Gender, and the Politics of ERA: A State and the Nation [Co-author] (New York: Oxford University Press, 1990); Religion in the Old South (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1977); Slavery and Methodism: A Chapter in American Morality 1780-1845 (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1965).

Current research projects include:

• The Southern Rite of Human Sacrifice: Lynching and Religion in the South, 1875-1940. See http://jsr.as.wvu.edu, volume 3.
• Crucifixion--Faith in the Christian South: 1740-2000, An Interpretive History . . . of the social and cultural power of religion in the South. Essential to the story is that of African American churches and the development of religious movements from the 1850s through the late twentieth century. Equally essential is understanding the fundamentalist sensibility that came to characterize southern religion and culture.
