Research Interests
Fletcher's research interests lie in the field of modern Japanese history, 1868 to the present. Most recently his research has focused on the political economy of Japan -- the dynamics of Japan's industrialization and the relationship between the state and the private sector. His major publications include The Search for a New Order: Intellectuals and Fascism in Prewar Japan (University of North Carolina Press, 1982); The Japanese Business Community and National Trade Policy, 1920-1942 (University of North Carolina Press, 1989); "The Japan Spinners Association: Creating Industrial Policy in Meiji Japan: in The Journal of Japanese Studies, Vol. 22, No. 1 (Winter 1996); "Co-operation and Competition in the Rise of the Japanese Cotton Spinning Industry, 1890- 1926," Asia Pacific Business Review, Vol. 5, No. 1 (Autumn 1998); "Economic Power and Political Influence: The Japan Spinners Association, 1900-1930," Asia Pacific Business Review, Vol. 7, No. 2 (Winter 2000), pp. 39-62; and "The Impact of the Great Depression: The Japan Spinners Association, 1927-1936," in Morris Low, ed., Building a Modern Japan (N.Y.: Palgrave MacMillan, 2005), pp. 207-232.
