Research Interests
Prof. Coclanis works primarily in economic and business history. Most of his earlier research focused on the American South in the 18th and 19th century, but in recent years he has been working on other areas and time periods as well, particularly on Southeast Asia in the 19th and 20th century. His current big project is on the creation of integrated world markets for tropical and semi-tropical commodities, with a special emphasis on rice. This project has taken him to archives (and rice paddies) all over the world.
His teaching interests are similar to his research interests for the most part. In addition to the U.S. history survey, he teaches specialized courses on various aspects of American economic and business history, on Southeast Asian economic history, and on global economic history. He has also taught both halves of the U.S. historiography graduate colloquium and the first half of the global history graduate colloquium.
His teaching schedule is currently quite limited because of his responsibilities as Associate Provost for International Affairs.
