Research Interests
William Barney's research focuses on the 19th-century U.S., especially the antebellum South. He has dealt with the South in The Road to Secession (1972), The Secessionist Impulse (1974), Flawed Victory (1975), and Battleground for the Union (1990). In the Passage of the Republic (1987), he tried to make sense of the 19th century as a whole.
He recently finished revisions for the second edition of The American Journey, a multi-authored text on U.S. history, edited A Companion to 19th-Century America for Blackwell Pulbishers, and wrote The Civil War and Reconstruction: A Student Companion for Oxford University Press. He is currently researching a book on the cultural and economic politics of secession.
