HIST 22: United States History since 1865

This course covers major themes and issues in American history since 1865. We will pay particular attention to the social and cultural transformations that occurred between 1865 and the 1980's. More specifically, we will examine different ways Americans adjusted to, understood and made sense of these changes. We will also take a look at those moments when these different perspectives and experiences emerged as the subject of public conflict and debate. Readings for the course consist of a textbook as well as a variety of different historical documents including speeches, newspaper articles, memoirs. The course includes a midterm and final as well as several papers, all of which are designed to enhance critical thinking skills.
